Mid-Term update

15th Feb 2025

It has a been an eventful half term for us here in 4th class. Although interrupted by weather and bank holiday closures, 4th class have achieved a lot in this half term. We celebrated literacy week, culture week, St.Brigid's day and used Storm Éowyn as an example of how storms occur.

In English we revisited debate writing and had some great class discussions. The children showed excellent debating skills and came up with some very mature arguments. We also continued working on comprehension skills in both English and Irish and are making progress in both. Maths is an area where we have seen the most improvement as we worked on some of the more harder topics such as fractions and long multiplication. We spent a lot of time learning about The Romans in history. The children put their laptop and art skills to the test as they completed a project on the Romans which is displayed outside our classroom. We have read three Irish themed novels so far this year and in this half term we read "The Sackville Street Caper", a fictional story about Bram Stoker and Molly Malone as children set in Dublin. The children seemed to enjoy it and learned about many of the landmarks and history of Dublin. This half term we celebrated literacy week where author Shane Hegarty visited the class. The PTA organized a short story competition and the winner for our class was Oisín with his story "hateful syrup". He received his prize at a whole school assembly. We also celebrated Culture week and researched Mexico as part of the celebrations. We continued our GAA coaching and have been practicing our hurling skills in the past few weeks. We also had a session with Keith from Skerries Town FC to keep up our soccer skills.  Our annual Valentine's bake sale took place this week and the children got the chance to bake and buy some sweet treats. We did some Valentine's art which was based on the Claddagh ring as we were learning about different Valentine's traditions.
